My MP3 player is filled with music from the various Mobile Suit Gundam series. I can particularly get grooving at the gym to "Star Children" (Gundam movie I), "Anime Ja Nai" (Gundam ZZ), or "Rhythm Emotion" (Gundam Wing). It also has some additional tracks from Gundam Wing theme performers TWO-MIX, including "Truth - A Great Detective of Love", which was the 5th opening theme of Detective Conan (thus making it the only song from an anime that has nothing to do with Gundam on my MP3 player).

But, right now, I'm listening to today's edition of the Jim Rome Show.

Pounding out of my laptop's speakers - "Holiday" by Green Day. It's one of the few songs I really like to crank the volume with. :D

I'd debated using the first lines of the song in "OLS," (Hear the sound of the falling rain; Coming down like an Armageddon flame) to play in Ron's "mental jukebox" as small pieces of rock and shrapnel begin to sprinkle down from the lair he'd just blown up. However, the tone didn't fit, so I went with a stanza from "Wake Me Up When September Ends" instead.

I've heard that a lot on the radio. It's pretty good. On the surface, it seems pretty uplifting - the process of finally forgiving yourself for a long-ago wrong and finding the courage to let it go and face a new day. ...But I'd also worried the song could've alternatively insinuated about blowing your brains out. (I'll face myself/ To cross out what I’ve become/ Erase myself / And let go of what I've done)

Thankfully, due to a Wikipedia search, this appears not to have been the case. The music videos seem to point to a more global crime/redemption. The alternative would've been rather depressing. :dubiety:

My current sounds are the "top 40" countdown on the local classical station WRR in Dallas. They do this every Labour Day, and it's better than having an IPod for an old sucka like me!

At 10 PM, they'll go to organ music (Pipe Dreams), and I'll cut over to a CD, likely either song by Ben Francis (an English gentleman who has provided several works for my stories) or Leonard Bernstein's Mass. This is my writing music, and I'm on a roll tonight (and, no, Mike, it's not a Parker House Roll!).

Another aficionado, eh? What could be better for a United Methodist than to listen to a Catholic Mass written by a good Jewish Boy for a nation priding itself on religious freedom (how's that for your wierdar, Campy!)

I fell in love with it in 1975;a raven-haired beauty, my 'Bonnie' of the orchestral and ensemble world, introduced me to it one Saturday afternoon, and I should have kissed her full on the lips for that; alas, I was worse than Ron in season 1 with Kim.

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra did it in an oratorio style, but I missed it. I had them send me two programs, but they got tossed accidentally a few months ago. I still have the vinyls that I purchased years ago, and I have the CDs, as well; at least they're not next to Tom Lehrer on the shelf!

The one year survival rate is only about 1%. I found out he had pancreatic cancer about eight months ago or so, so I knew it was just a matter of time. I ought to get myself some classical... I used to listen to that stuff all the time when I was a kid. WQRS-FM, 105.1, was my favorite station... then they pulled it off.

There are a couple of stations around here (89.9, 90.9) that have classical as well, but I don't listen to them as much as I did the other.

Anyway... I'm currently listening to the soundtrack from The Big O, by Toshikiko Sahashi. The current track is "Touch", a rather disturbing-sounding piece best associated with the character Schwarzwald.

It is tough to find good classical stations. We are blessed in Dallas for that, however. WRR 101.1 was the first radio station in Texas (early 1920's as I recall). It is one of the best classical music stations in the world. You can also access it and listen to it on the web: www.wrr101.com

Now that I'm back at the computer, I've gone back to the Big O soundtrack. The current piece is called "Solitude", and it kind of reminds me of Jerry Goldsmith's score from Star Trek: The Motion Picture... in fact, the only thing that's really missing is the "Blaster Beam".

Back in the day, when he was local in southern California, he'd go through "Hell Week" twice a year, when San Diego Chargers fans and Los Angeles Raiders fans would call in and rip on each other. It diminished a bit when the Raiders moved back to Oakland, and as the show went national, "Hell Week" pretty much faded away.

However, this week has been the modern-day equivalent of "Hell Week", except it involves two college football programs: the University of Southern California Trojans, and the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. Fans on both sides have piled on each other, although Nebraska fan has been more vocal... but, possibly the best way to sum it up is how one e-mailer put it: "Porn vs. Corn".

The occasion? I finally brought myself to watch "Graduation," and the song kinda fits my extremely wired state of mind at the moment.

The piece was composed for a documentary on the life of boxer Jack Johnson, and each time Miles blows his trumpet it is supposed to signify Johnson landing a punch.

Well, each episode was actually an hour in length. And the next time you watch a "Star Trek" episode or movie, ignore the technology and concentrate on the characters. There's a lot of good, solid drama in the very best of all the "Star Trek" shows. "Star Trek's" not about the technology; it never was. Science fiction at its best is about people who are in a futuristic or otherworldly setting. And yes, there was drunkenness in "Trek;" in the Original Series episode "The Enemy Within," Captain Kirk was split into two seperate people by a transporter accident - one Kirk was good; the other, evil. In the scene I'm referring to, the evil Kirk demanded a bottle of brandy from Dr. McCoy in sick bay then swaggered down the ship's corridors drinking from the bottle as casual as can be.
While he wanted the series to be an optimistic vision of humanity's future, "Star Trek's" creator, Gene Roddenberry, wasn't afraid to incorporate subtle commentaries about present-day humanity into his scripts. That's another trait of good science fiction.:alumnus:

Oh, they weren't afraid to tackle some sensitive issues on Star Trek, especially more so on ST:TNG. The drunkenness thing ( This was the movie Star Trek: First Contact) came about because in the 23rd century all alcoholic beverages were made with synthohol, which gave you the flavoring and sensation of alcohol, but without getting you drunk. But in ST:FC, the Enterprise had traveled back to 21st century Earth where Deanna was trying to convince Zeffram Cochrane to fly the first warp capable spaceship and make history. She had to swap drinks with him to keep him talking, and didn't realize the alcohol was real, nor was she prepared for how it got her drunk. The scene was played for comedy.:alumnus:

But they did have real alcohol in the 23rd and 24th Centuries - witness Scotty's imbibing Scotch, and Chekov's love of vodka, in the Original Series. Guinan, the bartender on the Enterprise-D, also had a selection of real alcoholic beverages available behind the bar. It's just that after the Ferengi introduced synthehol to the Federation (they invented it, IIRC), most Starfleet personnel preferred that beverage because of its non-intoxicating properties.

When Riker first meets Cochrane in the bar after the Borg ship has attacked the settlement, he comes upon Deanna sitting there drunk while Cochran's dancing to the music on the jukebox. The tune he's playing (at very high volume) is "Ooby Dooby."
They had drunkenness in "Star Trek?" I've always assumed it to be "Yay, everything's just hunky-dory exploring in space, and a convoluted bit of technobabble will save us from just about anything within the space of a half-hour episode."

So true, so true. I stand corrected.:)

Actually, I always thought of K&R (even prior to StD) whenever I heard his "Just for You."

I couldn't agree more. The last line in my major Fan Fic which speaks about Ron, tells of him just looking at Kim and thinking to himself, "Man, I have GOT to be the luckiest guy on the planet."

There's no doubt in my mind that is what he thinks.

"The Highwayman," sung by Loreena McKennitt. A haunting, beautiful song, and the mental imagery is incredible. Unfortunately, she left out two stanzas of Alfred Noyes' original poem that I really liked. The first, about Tom, was absolutely critical to understanding why the redcoats turned up in the first place. The second, about Bess and her quest for the musket trigger, was a really cool bit of imagery.

Due to the ongoing spat between the Big Ten Network and Comcast, I'm forced to listen to the Michigan-Purdue game on the radio.

Actually, though, being on the computer right now, I'd be listening to it on the radio anyway, since I don't have a TV down here... but I find it annoying that Comcast is basically screwing us by not wanting to buy the services, and the BTN is basically screwing both Comcast subscribers AND those who do not have cable or satellite by keeping Michigan AND Michigan State games off of free TV. (In past seasons, Michigan would either always be on our ABC affiliate or on ESPN; MSU would either be on one of those channels, ESPN2, or the ESPN+ package, and picked up by another local station.)
