Yeah, that happened a few days ago. I wouldn't say the Chinese jet caught fire, exactly, more like exploded.
No one was seriously hurt, thankfully; all 165 pasengers and crew evacuated. The pilot jumped from the cockpit windows just a few seconds before the airplane detonated.

They say the left engine exploded a minute after the jet entered its parking spot on the airport's ramp. The explosion was supposedly caused by a fire that started because the aircraft skidded on the tarmac on its way from the runway to the gate after landing. (At least that's what the report on the ABC News website said.)
As to what I'm currently watching: well, I just finished watching "Stop Team Go" on DC. It just occurred to me that the character design for Electronique reminds me of a cross between the Bride of Frankenstein and the Borg Queen from the movie "Star Trek: First Contact."

As to what I'm currently watching: Nothing. Our cable service went down around quarter to 6 PM local time, and it still hasn't been restored. I missed a new episode of "Mythbusters" where they tackled superhero myths (including grappler guns and pulleys to lift the hero up the sides of buildings - sound familiar, gang? ;)) because those clowns at Comcast Cablevision dropped the ball tonight. Maybe they should change their name to "Incompetent-cast Cablevision"....

I just watched two episodes of "Dogfights" on the History Channel. The show recalls notable instances of air-to-air combat involving American fighter pilots in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. They even include comments from some of the fighter pilots themselves. The CG recreations of the dogfights are just incredible... it's as if you're in the air alongside these planes as they fight. Great series if you enjoy aviation, military history, or both...

We were watching the same episodes, then. :D I particularly enjoyed the P-51 segment of the "No Room for Error" episode. (It should've been called something like "On the Deck," though, IMHO.) Anyway, I have particular interest in WWII aviation, and with several thick WWII flight sim manuals sitting on the bookshelf behind me, I have some understanding of the almost-ridiculous strain the pilots were putting on themselves and their machines during the series of up-and-down U-turns. And without g-suits, either....
I agree that the CGI is outstanding. I was particularly awed by the special effects between a pair of A-1 Skyraiders and a MiG-17... Particularly the attention-to-detail given to the treeline and the concluding fireball. They've really stepped up the graphics from earlier episodes.

I watched "Rewriting History" on DC. I took a few minutes after the show, and figured out exactly how much time was on the Electro-Static Illuminator when Kim and Ron found it in the Middleton Museum after 100 years. The readout on the device's timer said, "52560000," or 52,560,000 seconds. That works out to only 1 year, 7 months, 30 days, and 8 hours. 100 years' worth of electrical charge works out to be 3,135,600,000 seconds, far more than what the readout indicated.

And what bad@$$ Kryptonians they were, but that's what happens when the main villain, General Jax-Ur, is played by Ron Perlman. The man just rocks in that sort of role.

I am hoping it won't be too long a wait, I'd really like to have copies of the shows without the crawlers, logos, commercials, medallions and so on. I'm guessing that if we start getting DVDs it probably won't be until next year. I imagine Disney will let the burst of viewership after the finale die down before they release something like that. I would hope that hey include some interviews from the cast and crew, but don't really expect it. Extras like we saw on some of the DCM are unlikely based on Steve Loter's remarks that stuff that is cut generally doesn't survive the animatic stage and usually gets erased from the computers.

I haven't watched anything today, but last night was rather interesting...
After a long day, I turned in early, but wasn't actually sleepy yet, so I flipped around a bit. Then I saw something strange as I went by ABC Family... "Slacker Cats". A show that seems rather strange for a network with "Family" in its title, considering that these cats say (the 3-letter word for "butt") and "hell" and other such words.
But, the show does feature Nicole Sullivan doing one of the voices...

Gee, morals isn't about what you say. It's not even always about what you are doing. Mind and reason, that's what counts. Words are merely words, the problem is which intention you use them with.
Okay, I don't know the show and it doesn't sound interesting. But "no one seems to have morals" is just too extreme a statement. Not to mention the fact that a horde of persons of good morals doesn't stick out as much as a few crooks.

Websters dictionary Definition of Moral - Concerned with principles of right and wrong or conforming to standards of behavior and character based on those principles.
If some show has sick writers write sick things that make it exactly that... Sick! Then I call it how it is. There nothing extreme about it unless the truth is extreme. If I feel that something is wrong I and wanna say something about it I will do just that and I'd appreciate you not attacking my right to judge something. I dont want to make this personal.

If you get the chance to watch the show then the exaggeration will disapear. As far as the moral thing, I'm Refering to people that come up with shows that just have no purpose but toilet humor, Racial bashing, and other thing. I am not refering to everyone in the world as far as regular people not having morals. But theres alot of problem with Hollywood and TV shows now a days.

I see your point. It's just my sense of exact language which makes me sound more assaulting than intended.
The problem is that many will understand who and what is meant but some take what they read literally - that's what I'm most of the time afraid of.
Rubbish on TV is a problem I know well. But that's not the thread to discuss such a wide topic, I guess.

While I was at my sister's house, my nephews decided to play some of season 1 of Beast Wars. There's some great humor interjected into that series, but one of my favorite bits of the episodes played today was the introduction of the Predacon, Inferno.
"I must protect the Colony in the name of the Royalty!" The only thing that's better is that, in subsequent episodes, he refers to Megatron as "my Queen", since he thinks he's an actual fire ant, rather than a Predacon.

Yes, Home Improvement being added to Nick's evening schedule is a blessing. It's kind of a shame Nick has moved on to showing more recent shows, but hey, at least it's quality shows for the most part. Now if only my cable provider had TV Land or whatever Nick calls their sister station...
As for what I've been watching tonight... just Bleach. They finally got to the episode I've been waiting a long time to see (though I long since gave up waiting and picked up the manga). Still it was so worth it to see. Hey, any episode focused on my favorite characters (Rukia in this case) can't be all bad. And it was nowhere near bad.
Though it really isn't doing a whole lot to make Byakuya a character to even remotely like. It just leaves you wanting to see him get his tail kicked and badly. And that ending theme song seriously needs to be changed. A song entitled "Happy People!" so does not fit in when the episode is a rather depressing one and ends on a real downer.
"Hey, you're going to eventually die of TB (not to mention it's all your fault that your best friend died) and I'm going to sit back and do absolutely nothing while my sister is wrongfully executed."
*Cue the "Happy People!" song.*

You know i'm probably one of the biggest FF7 fans you'll ever meet and advent children was a great movie but ameraican fans were basically slapped in the face by the poor voice over. I'm not saying anything bad about the voice actors because they were perfect for each charater in my book. But They didn't go back and Re-CG It for english and after 2 years of delays... Just a bit. Considering how slow paced the Soul Society storyline is all by itself, the flashbacks just drag it out even more. Though as long as they focus on the characters I like (like Momo Hinamori a few weeks ago and Rukia in the most recent episode) I can let it slide.

Yeah, the lips flaps seemed just a little off at times. Distracting at first, but eventually I grew accustomed to it... until Sephiroth showed up. George Newburn makes an awesome voice for Sephiroth, but it the error in lip sync when he starts monologuing about his grand plan seemed way off... or so I remember.
As for the voice actors themselves, I also thought they all fit their roles quite well (with maybe the possible exception of Mena Suvari as Aerith; shame that Mandy Moore didn't return). Steve Blum was an obvious choice for Vincent, Rachel Leigh Cook made for a surprising good Tifa, and Christy Carlson Romano as Yuffie also worked out rather well for example.

I guess that means that the scene in "The Incredibles" where Violet hides underwater while the goon machine-guns the surface is, in fact, realistic. I'm guessing that the .50 cals have a lot of momentum, but their large size makes it harder to cut through the water, so they basically rip themselves apart?

I doubt they would fragment, but could deform significantly. A .50 cal slug, even from an M2 heavy machine gun would slow down pretty quickly in water so I'm not surprised it would stop in just three feet. But any heavy bullet with a slow velocity woudl do that. A lighter bullet with a hard jacket that is more hydrodynamic fired with a higher muzzle velocity would travel farther.

Its a great episode of mythbusters... there talking about a very intresting fact that I noticed a long time back. CD and DVD burners never really get up to the max recording speed that they say they can. Such example is a 52x cd burner most of this time may only reach 32x to 42x. I know my dvd burner is a 16x but the most i've see it get up to is 12x... go figure.

Well, having purchased the DVD, I watched Superman: Doomsday. Good film. Not entirely accurate to the Death and Return of Superman comics, no, but it did put a good spin on them and still capture the themes of the story nonetheless. And really... changes were to be expected, considering Bruce Timm and the others were left with the option of adapting nearly a year's worth of several comic series into one movie.
The film certainly had it's share of dark moments though, especially in regards to the Toyman (voiced John DiMaggio; kind of sounded like a cross between Drakken and Motor Ed).
About the only really downside to it all was that Bruce Timm already dealt with Superman's funeral in an episode of Justice League (and it was admittably done much better then).
Oh. Right. There was also a ten minute preview for the next direct to DVD animated feature. Looks real good (and apparently is a near perfect adaption of the comic its based on). I can't wait for The New Frontier to come out.

I'm looking to check that out, but my sister's video store didn't get it yet...
I did expect there to be significant differences, considering post-Doomsday things that occurred during the various DCAU series, such as the introduction of Steel; not to mention that Doomsday himself already put in a couple of appearances in JL/JLU (the first time, he was "lobotomized" by the Superman of the Justice Lords; the second time, if I recall correctly, regular Superman trapped him inside a volcano or something).
I've decided to watch The Irresponsible Captain Tylor again. I fell in love with this series when it aired on the old International Channel, and my DVDs of this series are one of my most prized possessions.
Probably one reason I came to like KP so much (other than the Shego factor, of course), is that Ron, in many ways, reminds me of Justy Ueki Tylor. Sure, he's not as downright lecherous as Tylor can be... but the carefree attitude the two characters share is what really does it for me.

Actually, the B-1A was killed by Jimmy Carter, who felt that our ICBMs would better protect us. The B-1 was revived under Reagan, and converted from a nuclear weapons platform into a conventional bomber. I just watched "Mentor of Our Discontent" (sic) on DC. It's interesting how J.K. Simmons, who played Martin Smarty on KP, was able to alter his voice for the character. His "Smarty" voice is so much different than the voice he used when he played J. Jonah Jameson in the "Spider-Man" movies (although he did an outstanding job in that role, too). Talk about a versatile actor, huh?

As an indication of just how good I think this series is, I like re-watching this series despite the less than 100% satisfactory ending. The ending isn't bad per se, it's just the story doesn't quite end the way I want it to--and usually not liking the ending ruins an entire series for me, even if everything up to the penultimate episode is great.

I'll admit it's not my favorite Season 4 episode (I have issues with Kim & Co. being forced to live and work in 18th-Century fashion, particularly since such real-life historical sites use volunteers - or paid actors - to do that for the entertainment and enlightenment of the tourists), but I just love the scene in the underwater lair where Ron's just cracked the window glass with the pick and the possessed Drakken runs for his life, exclaiming, "Shego! After watching the Cubs beat the Pirates 8 - 0, I watched an episode of "Hannah Montana" - the one where Miley defies her dad's wishes by sneaking off to Florida to compete in a charity concert against an obnoxious pop singer. There was a scene where Robby Ray (her dad) and Jackson (her older brother) are sitting back on the plane in coach, and the little kid sitting behind Jackson keeps kicking the back of Jackson's seat. When Jackson turns to confront the kid, the boy's dad - a big muscular guy with a Mohawk haircut - glares menacingly at Jackson, making him back down.
That scene bothers me every time I see it, because I've experienced that sitch far too often in real life. Some kid acts up in public, and when an adult who's not his or her parent confronts the kid, the kid's parent, instead of apologizing and disciplining the kid, defends the little brat's actions and gets hostile toward the other adult for yelling at their kid. The parent's attitude in such confrontations quite often is, "How dare you yell at my kid? He can do whatever he wants, no matter how disruptive he's being. Now mind your own business!"
It seems to me that a lot of folks are becoming more self-absorbed and less considerate of others' rights and feelings, which is only going to result in more scenes like the one above. In consequence, we're going to see civilized behavior on the decline as people step on other folks' toes (so to speak).
Sorry - I just had to get that off my chest. I'll get off my soapbox now, and we can go back to discussing TV shows, cable, and movies.

The best experience I ever had with that was on a military contract flight to Italy from the US. Most of the passengers were dependants and there was a high proportion of small children. When the two kids behind me were'nt running up and dpwn the aisles, they were kicking the back of my seat, by contrast the little boy in the seat in front of me sat quietly with his parents and would look over the back, fascinated with the shoulder boards on my summer white uniform. We were about halfway between Iceland and Ireland when I discovered that I was the senior officer on the plane (basically, the crew was trying to decide whether to refuel at Shannon or or continue on to Germany, according to the rules they are suppossed to consult with the officer in charge of troops, which, by default, was me. I voted for Shannon). Awash in the glow of my newly discovered status I told the father of the two annoying kids that he had two choices: get them under control or get of the plane in Ireland, at whihc point getting to where he was going would be his problem, not the Navy's.
The remainder of the flight was pleasant, the duty free shop at Shannon was very nice (as was the bar) and I landed at Capodochino looking like a 19th century type, with only one shoulder board (hey, I figured that good behavior should be rewarded).

I keep think of that rendition of the The Beach Boys' song, "Barbara Ann" by that group from Austin. Johnny (something) and the Rocket 88's....
"Bomb, bomb, bomb.......bomb, bomb Iran......."
That rendition came out in the '70's, with the hostage crisis, right? The rendition I first heard was in 2003, right before we went into Iraq. "Bomb, bomb, bomb... bomb, bomb Iraq." :dubiety:
With the fuss over Iran, it seems to have changed back.
You're right. It was 1979 during the Iran Hostage crisis when that came out. The group is called Johnny Dee and the Rocket 88's.
A politician is a politician is a politician.........but he's also a radical fanatic as well, I thnk. He just hides it well.Hides it well...? I don't think he's ever looked up "tact" in a dictionary. The day before he came here, he was showing off his military might, and boasting that "any country that tries a hit-and-run will be in for very serious consequences." Many of the missiles and tanks in the weapons parade had "Death to Israel" and "Down with America" on them. Yes, just the thing to do right before you come here... :ohwell:[/quote]
Well, yeah, you're right here too. He doesn't really hide it that well, does he?:ohwell:

Today, I watched my tape of last night's SciFi stuff, namely the season premiere of Stargate: Atlantis and the penultimate episode of the third series of Doctor Who.
After that, I caught the first game of the NHL's regular season, held in London, between the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings. The owner of the Kings also owns a number of sports interests in England, including football teams, and the 02 Arena where they played this game (and tomorrow's game as well). The only problem was that the game was delayed by about half an hour, as they had problems with getting the lights back on after the anthems.
Then I watched Code Monkeys on G4. After that, a whole lotta nothin'.

So have I. I've always liked seafood, especially crab meat. "Deadliest Catch" is interesting because I never realized the risks those fishermen take to bring crab to our dinner tables. They truly earn the money they make during each crab season.
As to what I'm watching, well, I just finished watching "Larry's Birthday" on DC. Poor Kim; not being a gamer or SF/fantasy fan, she wasn't at all happy when she took Larry to the comic shop, was she?;)

Reminds me of the time the Robotics team and I were watching "Austin Powers in Goldmember" on the way back from the global competition in Atlanta, Georgia. This took place in April, shortly after Britney Spears's media Chernobyl, and when the diva's head blew up in the opening spoof, the entire bus erupted with cheers, laugher, and clapping.

The SciFi network seems to suffer from the belief that CGI special effects are more important than good scripts and good acting all too often. They've had quite a few good shows on there, but most have migrated from somewhere else, the Stargate franchiose being a good example. I do give them points for some shows such as Eureka! however, though I am still somewhat confused as to why they periodically show wrestling given the number of channels already given over to it and it's lack of relation to science fiction.

Funny; that's what David Warner said about playing the bad guys...
(FYI, he played Jack the Ripper in the 1979 film "Time After Time." He also played Sark in "Tron," as well as Captain Sawyer in the Horatio Hornblower movies "Mutiny" and "Retribution." Not to forget his role as Chancellor Gorkon in "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.")

I'm reading the Beloit College Mindset List (http://www.beloit.edu/~pubaff/mindset/index.php).
The point of the listing is to give an idea how incoming teens might view things, and how historical events register on our collective conceiousness, which enables teachers to better relate events of the past to our current experiences.
It's hilarious, snarky, pointed, potent, and depressing all at the same time.
To quote the site:
Our effort is to identify a worldview of 18 year-olds in the fall of 2007. We take a risk in some cases of making generalizations, particularly given that our students at Beloit College for instance come from every state and scores of nations.
The "Class of 2011" refers to students entering college this year. They are generally 18 which suggests they were born in 1989.
The list identifies the experiences and event horizons of students as they commence higher education and is not meant to reflect on their preparatory education.
The lists for 2010 and 2011 mostly covers what I've experienced growing up; the earlier years mostly involve kids who were born in the mid-to-late '80's.
Two lines in particular that make me grin and wince at the same time:
2010 class: The Soviet Union has never existed, and therefore is about as scary as the student union. (A student union, according to my dad, is another word for the Commons or Quad. Weird.)
2011 class: When all else fails, the Prozac defense has always been a possibility.
