View Full Version : Kim Possible: The best friend pairing, A copying idea?

I have notice that the best friends pairing seems to happen alot more in shows now.

The one that comes to mind is Danny Phantom. For those of you who don't know what its about, Danny Fenton, A teen boy with ghost powers saves the world with his two best friends, a gothic vegatarian, Sam Manson and a computer tech geek, Tucker Foley. The show is on Nick.

Now KP began hinting the Kim/Ron idea in the third season. The then series finale saw K/R getting together.

Ironically, DP also began hinting Danny/Sam in the third season. And in the series finale, Phantom Planet (Copying KP somewhat) They finally got together.

My question is did the production team of DP copy this idea? Being the Third season of DP has just recently ended, and the 3rd season of KP was a year ago. It's just a thought I had running through my head and was wondering has anybody else noticed this?

I think it's just a natural way to end a series, and a lot of Disney Channel shows have it. I guess it's because many boys and girls who are friends start to half feelings for each other. And it makes for happy endings.

What GoTeamGirl said. That's a fairly common theme, the main character ending up with his/her best friend of the opposite gender, some shows/movies that have pulled it include Lizzie McGuire, Teen Titans, Pirates of The Caribbean, Boy Meets World, Sky High (another Mark and Bob production), etc. The list goes on.

hmmm...

I am wondering now as to why all these shows and movies are doing this. Maybe I'm being ignorant, but is this happening in the real world alot? My closest friend of 13 years is female, but we are just that. So maybe I am ignorant...

Not at all, Mike, not at all. A great many friendships between a boy and a girl growing up stay exactly that way throughout their lives. Every now and then, it does develop into something more. It doesn't mean it should.

I think they are making somewhat of a big thing out of it because when you have a romantic pairing developing out of a true best friendship, it's one of the best foundations to build that kind of relationship. I think Disney especailly likes the idea as it really fits the family values image they always wish to present. It makes you think that a married couple, for instance, must have a really solid relationship if they are also best friends.

But as I said, it doesn't mean a romantic relationship should happen to best friends who happen to be of the opposite sex.

See, this is my problem. Are companies trying to shove this date your best friend down my throat? I don't have any problem with the idea, but a majiority of shows on Nick & Disney are pushing this. Is this the new standard for a pairing?

jeriddian
08-28-2007, 12:38 AM
I guess they are pushing it a little too hard, actually. It's just they get a lot of mileage out of that from the shippers.

They probably do it for rating also, because A LOT of people like to see the two best friends get together and become a couple.. It's good TV.

There is no denying that the best friends dating rolls in alot of people for ratings.

A lot like it.

But I just am starting to get tired of seeing it happen in alot of things I watch on TV. Anybody else feel the same?

Given the disturbing reality of teen dating these days ("hooking up" anyone?) I think it's actually a good thing for TV shows to depict romantic relationships involving teens that are rooted in friendship.

Well I'm still a teen...

Maybe that is why I am starting to feel this way.

But don't get me wrong, I like Kim and Ron together. I also like a few other BF pairings from other shows. It's just kind of startin to become used too much.

MrDrP,

We teens around don't use "hooking up" anymore. We say "get together" or "dating" to describe couples.

Am I the youngest person here (my age: 19)?

The 15 year olds I've been working with the past two years still say "hooking up" in addition to "getting together." They also use the term dating, but that's something very different from hooking up.

There's a very clear connotation to hooking up and it doesn't involve the kind of wholesome relationship Kim and Ron have.

I would like to say for the records that most of the teens I've worked with have been interested in pursuing healthy relationships.

It's very nice to know that teens that you work with want healthy relationships DrP. Around here, usually a couple lasts maybe a month. I'm no expert on gettin together either. It's been 2 1/2 years since my last girlfriend.

Well then,

I am officialy not the youngest! Yeehaw!

Yes, a hookup is really different than going out or dating. Hooking up is usually different in high school and college, too.

(And GoTeamGirl and I are also younger.)

...since Pre-K, MikeI? After she showed up at the date with the baby blue dress and her natural red hair and told you 'since the first day we met,' what do you think about 'best friends' pairing up, now?

I married mine 22+ years ago, and I wouldn't trade her for all the Nacos in the world.

From the other end of the spectrum, it's just an opportunity to enjoy the pleasure of someone's company (in fact in the service many invitations are headed RPYC, request the pleasure of your company, sometimes truncated to RPC), if it leads to other things, fine, if not, a pleasant evening (or day) is never wasted. Most people make far to big a deal out dates, probably a result of the way they are portrayed in media.

...to tell her how you felt...you don't have a Rufus to talk to about this, and Barkin moved!

Tell her after the movie, and you'll finish the date with one of the following:

1. her running away, screaming;
2. the 'let's just be friends' speech;
3. a shy smile and a 'me, too;' or
4. a massive and quite enjoyable kissing and groping session.

but, you'll never know until you take the chance. It's up to you, sir: Ron for seasons 1-3 before STD:pre-cactus, or Ron in STD: cactus forward/season 4 (best to explain in terms we can all understand).

My personal opinion is that you'll end up with 3 or 4, less chance of 2, and practically no chance of 1. Remember, Ron said that the worst thing was to talk about your feelings: he didn't complain about it after the prom.

I don't mind the "best friends getting together" thing at all. It's often a fairly sensible, logical way to end a series, if a bit predictable. The way it worked out with K/R, I liked it.

About ages: How old is Fireand'chutes77? I'm 15 (16 on November 5), but I think there were a few people who were younger than me.

The date went a-o-k.

We saw Holloween (By the way, that was one of the best movies I have ever seen...seriously) and then came back to my place. (Get them images out of your head, nothing happened...) We sat around pretty much and just talked about life in general. She was starting to get tired, but she didn't want to leave. So I called her mom, said she was staying over at my place, and after that we both crashed...Me on the couch, I gave her my bed.

Things are going so well it makes me wonder:

Should I question things more often? I mean literally a few days after this thread went up, I start dating my best friend...

Being a Millionaire is so over rated. Anyone agree? (Haha, just a test to see if it works!) :harhar:

This is a scene from 'Define, Hell I', bad, Mike I: I laughed when I read your post, because it immediately came to mind: Ron takes the couch and offers his bed to Bonnie.

You know, that scene from your fic did cross into my mind too... Funny how that worked. Oh but Mr. Neb, she could say she has slept in my bed long before all of this. (Usually when she stays the night she takes my bed anyway, And I take the floor or the couch downstairs...) It was a bummer though, she had to work today. I have the next 2 weeks off! Vacation!

Oh and cp, I think you will enjoy this.

Last night as we were heading back to my place, she wanted to stop for something to drink. I told her no and laughed at her face. But her face looked strikingly familiar...Her bottom lip was sticking out a little. I said "OMG! That's the PDP!"

"You know what the PDP is Mikey?" she asked.

I said, "Umm, Booyah?"

She asked, "Do you know who KP is?"

Turns out, she is a secret fan to KP from her babysitting. She watches it all the time with one girl she babysits (apparently they have a nice collection of tapes.)

You have a young lady who's been your Best Friend (BF) since she met you even before Pre-K, who went back to her natural red hair after you made a casual comment about it, who babysits, who has a PDP, who knows what the PDP is, who asks you if you know who KP is, and who is a secret KP fan.

There are two questions I need to ask:
1. does she have a twin sister?
2. when's the wedding, cause if you don't marry her there's a line forming outside your virtual door of people who will.

Congratulations, Mike I: I think you struck the mother lode with this young lady, and you should take Wade's attitude with Joss and do 'whatever it takes' to keep her, to woo her, whatever.

Then again, that's just my opinion....

I did have an interesting sitch this AM at church, though: when the pastor asked if we'd thought about out 'sitch' before, I didn't do a spit-take (fortunately for me); I did, however, have an unsuccessful attempt afterwards, after we got home, at transforming myself into "The Peerless Pincher" as my wife moved too fast as she exited the car.

Nebster please, there are little children present... The pincher scares them to the point of peeing thier pants. (But if it is for your wife, M.I. may just have to reconsider.)

How's dinner coming along?

What are you doing here instead of concentrating on that and the beta work? I finished mine (beta on 3 stories) yesterday evening, and I'm working on the original work now (up to 16 pages, current target is 250-300).

Dinner will be gettin started at 5:00 pm when my red head gets here to help me.

And why am I here? 'Cause I love you guys!!! (In a professional way of course)

Please no Sanity remarks.

EDIT: Remember my Million Dollar Post?

I just got a check in the mail (It was saturdays mail, I was just to Lazy to look through it) for completing a survey. Check was worth $10. Maybe this thread is magical after all!
