Well, we had it in on the old forum. I think tradition demands we continue it.

Congratulations to Mike_Industries on his four bronze stars!:D:biggergrin:

That was one of the fastest 100 poster tuns I've ever seen, although I'll bet the honored elders and elder exalted members have probably seen faster.:P

Wow, I just noticed on the GJA Index, I'm like the last post in GD, AD, and KP....wow. I'm that bad.

Hey, MI:

harassment is a requirement for us old guys, especially when they have young 'mentees' with gorgeous BFGFs: you should see how much harassment I give to the Ron-ster.

btw, doing this standing after Shego's last 'shot.' Plasma burns sting...seriously. :scared:

Well, I did manage to make about 80 posts in one night once... but that was many years ago, on another board that has long since vanished.

What was really impressive, though, was that I made every single post count! Even the ones in the spammy party thread!

These days, I don't worry about racking up posts for the sake of racking up posts or advancement... although, at my current pace, it won't be long before I get that second silver star!

In any case, congratulations, Mike Industries, on your milestone!

Yes, congrats on your advancement, Mike!
And, like jeriddian said, watch that you don't go 'way off-topic when you post like you did this morning. If you feel the need to start a new thread, by all means do so.
(As the moderator for the General Discussion forum, I feel I had to add my admonition to jeriddian's. By all means, feel free to post as much as you like; just try not to stray off-topic so much.)

Thanks for the warm congrats, everybody. Balancing 2 forums is a hoot, and add to that the writing and that nasty thing called 'real world' keeps getting in the way on occasions.

Stop over on ff and read some of the 'neb's works, if you haven't yet. There's angst, humor, angst, drama, and angst (I like angst: welcome to the real world). I'm writing for those underrepresented, those considered the outcasts, or not even noticed: Wade, Joss, Will Du, Sarah Best (the gitl in blue), Pandaroo...a little different vision of the KPverse in the JadeKimVerse and the DefineHellverse.

Meanwhile, there have been zero posts in the last ten days at the old place from whence we came, and I find it somewhat amusing that this is the last line that's been posted to date:
I think it's downhill from here.

Granted, I really don't want to play Travis Johnson to (that guy)'s Trent Green, taunting while he's down, but I just find that interesting that that actually is the last post to date.

I've altered my joining date on my profile to reflect the date I joined ARA. But only an admin can do this. If you like, let me know the original date you joined ARA and I can put that in your profile from my control section. :hmm: Hmmm, I'll have to think about that. Not sure I wouldn't rather just keep the GJA date ... but then, I did take the post count bump ... :hmm: ... maybe I should ask for the date I got tossed out of ARA.

We had the same kinda thing at our school. I never understood the chewing gum rule. Oh wait, I forgot... people were to good to put in the trash when they were finished, so they'd stick it under the desk or in other places. One bad apple... you know the rest.:dubiety:

Erm, no, it was my mom's idea. They didn't have anywhere else to put me and refused to leave me in the class room with the teacher while she ate lunch, not that any of my teachers would have minded. I'm the perfect little angel at school. :innocent:

Yeah... Though this was a field trip for the gifted class, so about 20-30 of the "good/smart" kids got busted. The teacher who gave me the detention hated me for some unknown reason, as I wasn't in any of her classes.

I had a teacher at my school hate me for some unknown reason too. She taught a couple of grades below mine. She tried to get me in trouble when Lupe and me would get into scuffles. At least three times she tried to suspend me, and my current teacher would come to our rescue. She was always flirting with my dad when she saw him too, always claiming she thought he was someone else.

Ace, one of my BFFs in college was consistent about destroying the curve in Multivariate Calculus and Differential Equations: people would walk out after receiving their test scores, bemoaning their 60s-80s.

Question: C.E., what did you make?

(C.E., softly and shyly) 98 (followed by screams from all around her).

The other students' depression was the fact that she was taking the class for fun: she was a pre-med major, nailing everything in her major all of her undergraduate career.

She found her true love in one of her classes, and they're both doctors and still married, wiht kids, after over 25 years. I still think he's a lucky duck: I still think of C.E. fondly, even after all these years...my unrelated identical twin sister, because we could (and often did) complete each other's sentences and enjoyed each others company a great deal.

Well, that sounds like me; I have three science classes I'm taking this year, purely for fun, and I have A+ in two, with a 98 in the third.

I remember one of my friends from Pre-K that I have since cut some ties with; we're still friends, just not the best of friends like we were. We would tell everyone we were twin brother and sister since I always wanted a twin brother.

It used to be that way here in the U.S. - 18 for beer and wine; 21 for hard liquor - until the early 1980's. Then they changed the law so you have to be 21 to buy any alcoholic beverages. I remember hearing a lot of 18-year-olds griping about the change when it occurred. I wasn't bothered by the new law, because I was already over 21 when it went into effect.

States set their own rules. When I turned 18 in 1971 I lived in NY, and could drink hard liquor starting that day. Then I went to college in Mass. and couldn't drink any alcohol. Then they lowered the age here for a while, until MADD got pretty much everyone to raise it to 21. :alumnus:

You know, I think you're right. State law in both Illinois and Wisconsin divided it into the "Beer & wine at 18; hard liquor at 21" distinctions in the 70's (I know that for a fact, since a 14-year-old I met on Scout camp staff in 1975 only befriended other staff members who could drive him into town on his days off and buy beer & wine for him. Since I was under 18 myself and had no driver's license, the kid snubbed my attempts at friendship). The Illinois state legislature changed the law to 21 for all alcohol in the early 80's with great fanfare; and I imagine Wisconsin did so at the same time, or shortly afterward.

The 21 thing was kind of funny, I'd been overseas at 18 and there were no restrictions there, the age was 18 for everything in Hawaii where we spent some time. Got back to CONUS and the age had gone down to 18 pretty much everywhere but California, which is kind of funny for a place that's always touting how liberal it is. Kind of made turning 21 a non-event, though.

My biggest gripe with changing the age back to 21 is the way it was done. If it had been subjected to a vote and the consensus was 21, then fine. MADD, however pulled a backdoor thing by getting Transportation to change the wording in the highway funding regs.

Yes, they "twisted a few arms," so to speak, by doing it that way. As it was, MADD had an ally in the White House at the time; the proposed change in liquor laws was in keeping with President Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign (even though that dealt primarily with drugs).

If only MADD had left well enough alone, the 21-year-olds who partied at the local nudie bar before crashing their SUV into my house might have got that out of their systems years before.

Or then again, the accident might have happened 3 years earlier. Who knows? :hmm:

Didn't know they still had nudie bars in Mass. Part of the problem with booze here, is that there's too much of a mystique about it, I suspect that things like the 21 year age limit fuel it. That and things like those "Girls Gone Stupid" videos with relayed encouragements to get drunk and be somebody (preferrebly somebody else, somewhere else, I've had enough people barf on my shoes to adequatly cover that particular checklist item, thanks). The general message that comes out is that rather than to savor the stuff, or enjoy the relief on a hot day, the whole point is to get trashed as quickly as possible. While I've gotten beyond cheerful a couple of times the aftermath is not worth the trip anymore (of course it may be that I just don't spring back as quickly as I did in days of old). Most places where they don't make as big a deal out of alcohol seem to have much less of a problem with it. I frequently speculate on the influence of puritanism we suffered over here having a hand in this (and many other strange behaviors).

As to making a big deal out of the alcohol, you have a very good point, Lunchmeat. Common Sense often has to be applied gently with a velvet glove. Trying to squeeze it hard into people with an iron fist will find many of them slipping through between the fingers.

Interesting, never really associated live music with establishments of that sort.

They still had some of those in the '70's back in the boondocks of West Texas and New Mexico. There weren't that many. For some reason those bar owners thought they could bring in a better crowd with both nude girls and live music. Bad idea all around, I thought.

Of course, in the United States the legal age to buy alcohol is 21.

In Finland it's 18 for beer, 21 for hard liquor.

Why? They're all alcoholic; they can both get you hammered and cause you to swerve into the other lane. Plus, people are more likely to chug beer.

(I have the nagging feeling that I've bought into whatever The Establishment is spouting. Hard.)

As for the 21 thing, one of my cousins turns 21 tomorrow. They visited us on the 30th, and we all went out to a annual family gathering in Roanoke yesterday and today. His parents wouldn't let him have any alc at the dinner we went to on the 31st, but at the family party, with "freedom" less than 12 hours away, they relented/bowed to the inevitable. Got me thinking about the same thing LM had:

Most places where they don't make as big a deal out of alcohol seem to have much less of a problem with it. I frequently speculate on the influence of puritanism we suffered over here having a hand in this (and many other strange behaviors).

Up through the teen years, the omnipresent "they" are saying, "No... No... Nope... can't have any... nope... no... no..." while at the same time hyping alcohol up to something beyond a liquid made with barley and hops and ethanol combined through a fermentation process that causes a chemical reaction in the brain (kinda makes the romance go poof, huh), and then, ding, at the stroke of midnight on your 21st year - you feel no different physically than when you were 20 a few minutes before - after years of (supposedly) complete abstention and prohibition and zero experience, they say, Okey-dokey, HAVE AT IT, KIDDIES!

Yes... ...I admit it 'chutes. I was somewhat of a rock and roll headbanger in my younger days. It took a few years to get my head on straight. but I never did the drug thing or drank too much. I always made it a point of pride not to drink more than two Bloody Mary's a night because I was working a job, not enjoying myself at these bars. That's the way I looked at it.

The amount of alcohol in beer and wine is smaller than that found in the "hard" liquor. I'm not sure exactly how much is found in beer or wine; I do know that the "proof" number found on the label of a liquor bottle is an indicator of how much alcohol it contains. Just take the proof number and divide by two - the resulting number is the percentage of alcohol by volume. Thus, an 80-proof whiskey contains 40% alcohol, while a 101-proof bourbon is 50.5%.
I guess when the old liquor laws were first written, our state legislators felt 18-year-olds could handle beer and wine due to their lower alcoholic content. However, given the number of traffic deaths attributed to drunk driving among young people, this has proven not to be the case.

A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Some states had a tiered system like the one described, to the point where they had different alcohol proofs availble for purchase once one hit 18. The older you got the stronger the stuff you were permitted to buy. I think the theory was kind of like training wheels: as one learned the effects of the stuff, a higher proof was permitted. If you've ever heard the terms "3 point or near" beer, that's where it came from. At the lower proofs, more time was spent going to the restroom than actually drinking the stuff.

Please accept my apologies if I came across that way. :o

Quite frankly, I'm a tad freaked that this dinky little issue has dominated the thread for a page or two. :surprised:

Hey, my mom's always trying to tell people my moniker is Ace In Kombat. I have been thinking about calling stuff 'Kombat Kreations' though.I think that there is an unwritten law that parents have a license to find creative ways to embarrass their children. Unfortunately, it does not get any better even when you reach my age. I just count my blessings that I still get to trade those hide-my-eyes-behind-my-hand moments for the hugs at the end of extended family gatherings, ;) though maybe not at the moment of embarrassment.

Thank you, all of you. I've said it before and I'll say it again, post like you have a purpose! That's for the rest of you, for me I've changed it to, "I am everywhere, you can not escape me."

Lunch budget? :blink:Seniors don't have their special table any more. You have to eat the mystery meat like everyone else now.

(A little "Ill Suited" reference. I guess if I have to explain it, it wasn't funny. :ohwell:)

EDIT: Actually, it's a "Trading Faces" reference. Episode titles confuse me sometimes.

Aw, don't worry sir. It was still funny. More so now that I know the reference. I was just confused for a second, that's all.
