View Full Version : No brainer? Left vs. right brain

I followed an interesting link to the Herald Sun (http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,22556281-661,00.html) in the land down under....
The Right brain versus Left brain test: do you see the dancer turning clockwise or counter-clockwise?
http://r32argent.ca/Miscellaneous/0,,5693171,00.gif
“If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.
Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it.”
The very first time I looked I saw the dancer turning counter-clockwise, so I guess I mostly use the left side of my brain, which didn’t surprise me. I was able to get the dancer to turn the other way fairly easily, if not consistently, by looking away and then looking back a few times.
Now when I look at the spinning lady I have no idea whether it will be turning clockwise or counter-clockwise. Weird.
Anywhoo, here are some attributes (as listed in the article) associated with the left and right brain:
LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses logic
detail oriented
facts rule
words and language
present and past
math and science
can comprehend
knowing
acknowledges
order/pattern perception
knows object name
reality based
forms strategies
practical
safe
RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses feeling
"big picture" oriented
imagination rules
symbols and images
present and future
philosophy and religion
can "get it" (i.e. meaning)
believes
appreciates
spatial perception
knows object function
fantasy based
presents possibilities
impetuous
risk taking
Take it for what it's worth. :)

I have to concentrate. When I first looked at it, it was going clockwise for me. Then I had concentrate and look away to make it go counter-clockwise. Then I concentrated again and looked away, then back, and I could see it turning clockwise again. It's hard switching it from one direction to the other.

I got her to go counter-clockwise, but need to work to get her to change direction. Freaky....

I can see her only going clockwise... I've tried hard, but I can't image how someone can see her going counter-clockwise... the rotation of her foot, spin to her hair, and position of her arms (the one on the outside would be more outstreched, due to the rotational force) all seem to indicate clockwise motion.
Looking at the different attributes, and with the amount of creative writing I do, I guess I fall squarely into the right-brain category.

I initially saw it as clockwise, but that might have been because I was doing history homework. I'm actually really left-brained.
The picture is easier to see if you go to the news article.
Also, a small part of me wonders if it's actually switching back and forth as an image. Unlikely. But hmm.

I just discovered an easier--for me, at least--and consistent way of switching the lady back and forth. I concentrate on the shadow and ignore the lady herself; I find it's relatively easy to spin her back and forth. It's feels kind of weird. :P

I'm in the same boat as 'chutes. Try as I might, I just can't get her to spin counter-clockwise. And after having read the list of right-brain attributes, I have to say they fit me to a "T," as well.
EDIT: I just tried canuck's trick of concentrating on her shadow - doesn't work for me. All it does is get me dizzy.

I just creeped myself out...
At first I thought she was clockwise...
Then after 10 seconds of staring into it... She was spinning counter clockwise...
Then another 10 seconds... clockwise...
What the crap? I change direction every ten seconds?
EDIT!!!!!
THE PICTURE IS A PHONY!!!!
IT CHANGES DIRECTIONS ON ITS OWN IF YOU PAY ATTENTION!!!
AHAHAHA! Whew... I thought I was losing my mind....
Here's how it happened...
Go up and pay attention to which direction the dancer is going... then refresh the page... As the picture reloads, it will change direction almost instantly!

Not on my computer...
I just refreshed the page four times. Each time, the dancer was still rotating clockwise. Try as I might, I could not get her to spin the other way.

It starts off clockwise.

Am I the only one who can see it then?
I just did it again... She starts clockwise... refresh... then after a few seconds, counter clockwise...
:hmm:
I think I am going to go sulk in a corner now...

The lady is only a simple gif, with limited frames. My guess is that you're just able to switch the lady back and forth easily, regardless of whether you refresh the page or not (?). Lucky you. ;):)

Hmm.. I can see her changing directions every now and then. Perhaps someone should open the pic in an editor and see if the switch is in the brain or in the pic.

Nice signature, by the way. ;) The link is helpful, as I don't know too many Norwegian cartoonists... Now that I think about it, Nemi looks a bit like Shego, actually... :D

Only if you buy the premium package. :P
I'm checking out the link to those Nemi comics... Maybe I should take up Norwegian instead of Spanish. Browsing through the pages, I still can't shake the feeling of an adolescent Shego...

I haven't thought about it before, but now that you mention it.. she does sorta remind me of Shego.
There's a link to a translation database on the Wiki page. They SHOULD have 5 comics on display at a time, though they don't show up on my screen.. It's a pity if you can't see them either; the comic's friggin' hilarious! And Nemi's just adorable.. sometimes.
