View Full Version : Nerd for Homecoming 2007

A funny thing happened at school today. To make a long story short, my nerdy friends and I decided to flood the Homecoming ballots with nerds running for prince (not king because we're not seniors), so we pulled twenty nomination sheets from the office and filled our names in, signed each others sheets, and then went up to random people to get their signatures. Next thing we knew, all twenty of us had the fifty signatures required to be nominated.
So today, all of the Homecoming candidates had to go to the gym during study hall for a meeting. Seeing that half the people attending were nerdy white boys was just golden.
Nomination just isn't enough for us, though. We're actually going for the win, so each of us has decided to throw our full weight behind one candidate, the nerdiest among us. The campaign is actually looking good so far—enough people may go for the novelty of voting for a nerd for Homecoming that we may actually have a good chance. :D
In case anyone cares, here's a thread about it, and there's a Myspace group (http://groups.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=groups.groupProfile&groupID=106656366&categoryID=0&Mytoken=F675F2A9-5180-4784-BAA4DC053CBC7C27104039171) about it, too (with pictures!). I'm not sure how well the campaign is going. We have a lot of support, but at the same time there's a lot of people saying "no way in heck is he winning." We're pretty sure our candidate got past the preliminary election, and Homecoming Week is next week.
We taped up a giant poster board on the gym building that read, "Sign your name here to pledge your vote to John Kesler." At the end of the day, there were quite a few signatures, including one in very large print that read "John Hancock."

Indeed. The person who signed that knows his/her history, that's for sure...

I heard a rumor that Leadership might fix the election to make sure our candidate doesn't win (perhaps because the candidates for princess complained), but it's just a rumor. Could be completely false and we won't really ever know.
Some of our posters are getting abused and torn down, but that's actually kind of encouraging, in a weird way; if we didn't have a chance, why would they bother? :P

I seem to remember a great many people going to a great deal of trouble to act like total s**ts when I was in high school.

Perhaps you're both right. The Nerd candidate might have gained enough popular support that the jerks are driven to vandalize the posters. Such an "underdog" is a natural target for their intolerance and hatred - a sad historical fact proven time and again down through the years.

There's irony here: the same people who shun are nw concerned about the power of the ones they shun.

Elections were today. Apparently each class gets a separate prince/princess pair. One of the kids we nominated was a freshman, and he was the only prince candidate for that class, so he's already won. It should be interesting because the rest of the freshman class hates him (not because he's a nerd, but because he's antisocial and kind of a jerk to people who aren't his friends).
We think Kesler has a good chance of winning. I didn't take very much time to look at the ballot—only enough to highlight Kesler's name and a random other name under the Princess category—but according to my friends, no "normal" boys were actually running. That means that the opposition is going to have to choose between a bunch of other (less flamboyant) nerds. There are so many choices that the only possible result from such a disorganized opposition is a split vote—which means a nerd party victory. :D
The Homecoming king/queen election is Friday, and apparently the entire school can vote in that. Some of the seniors are pushing their own nerd candidate. Can you guess who I'm voting for. ;)

Oh, so Malcolm Nevius is a freshman at your school?:laugh::laugh:
Well, the results should be most interesting.

It's a constant source of amazement to me to see how poorly the class bigshots fare after high school. The vast majority from my class ended up staying in the same backwater town doing trivial things. Meanwhile the people who were farther down on the high school food chain are largely professionals, business owners and corporate executives. There's apparently bit of kharma in these things, after all.

Well, we won. John Kesler is the junior Homecoming Prince. The nerds took Homecoming. Boo-yah.
Our princess is some cute-looking girl who refused to go to the Homecoming meeting at lunch because of the results. :P
Unfortunately, I may not go to the dance because today was the last day to buy tickets, and I forgot all about it. I'll try to convince the school treasurer to sell me one tomorrow, but chances are I won't be successful. :(

Awesome! For the guy, I mean. I wish my school had done that, but we actually didn't know who we were voting for until the very last minute because my class is forgetful.
Nerds are awesome!

Voting for Homecoming king and queen is tomorrow. I hope the nerds take that one, too!

Nice to see things work out this way for once...the "glamor boys (and girls)" must have been thrown for quite a loop by the election results, I imagine.

Huh, I wish my school had Homecoming in the fall, but we don't have football. Instead we have Homecoming following Spirit Week in the spring for basketball, baseball, and softball combined. I'm thinking about actually going this year and being a wall flower (for some reason I highly doubt any one is going to ask me to go, I'm one of the few 'nerds with good looks and brains that intimidate everyone including other nerds' as A.P. put it). :dubiety:

My school's like this... We don't have a football team (or cheerleaders... or a mascot) so our "homecoming" is actually winter formal around basketball season.
Congrats on your win!

Well, we definitely have cheerleaders, and each grade has a Mr. and Mrs. mascot (weird, no?). I wish we had soccer or chess club though. How can we have a bowling/academic team (I say slash because last year the bowling team was the academic team, me not included in the former but the latter), but not soccer or chess?!

Well, at Texas A&M, We don't have cheerleaders. We have "Yell" leaders. They are all males and all are pretty much elected from the Corps of Cadets. It's not that it is required that only males be Yell leaders, but the student body has stuck to tradition and has yet to alter it. Tradition is still a very big thing down there.

Well, I went to the dance, and learned that dancing* to rap music is surprisingly fun even if you don't like rap. Anyway, none of the princes and princesses danced together, only the king and queen, and seeing Kesler dance with the princess was half the reason I went anyway. :( Unfortunately, the nerd didn't win Homecoming king, but at least we tried.
*(It wasn't so much dancing as jumping around and headbanging, but whatever.)

Why not start one? They have to begin somewhere, with an action by somebody, you could leave your mark on the school that way. There is bound tp be a faculty member who would be willing to sponsor a club.

Heck, that was a rule when I joined at my old school in first grade! But they won't have soccer because they say there is no room for a field (*grumbles*). But chess... I remember being in third grade and always placing second in the tournaments, with first going to my friend in first grade. We made many enemies with the fourth, fifth, and sixth graders, some of which I see now when I go into the 'big town' and just want to punch because they tortured me that badly. Funny, my current school, anybody that messes with me gets turned into a mop by the rest of the student body; apparently being a well-known, normal looking 'nerd' has its advantages.

You don't know how much that pleases me to see girls who like to play chess. It is such a male dominated activity, but not for lack of trying by both sexes to get more girls interested in it. There have been more gains made over the last twenty years though, I'm glad to say.
And my story "Queen's Gambit accepted" deals with that to a degree, too.;)
