Well, judging from how many people seem to like Anime around here, I felt this was appropriate. I was thinking of doing a specific show... but there is so much Anime, it would just be wasted space.
So, I give you my top Anime list:
1. Karin
2. Bleach
3. Love Hina
4. Happy Lesson
5. Inuyasha
6. Dragonball Z
7. To Love-Ru
8. Sailor Moon
9. Death Note
10. Strawberry Panic
Side Note:
Don't know if this is what you wanted in the test forum, but I thought I give it a shot.

I don't know if these shows qualify as anime or not, but there were some Japanese-made cartoons I remember seeing on TV when I was a kid. Back when I was in third grade (1966-67), WGN-TV had an afternoon kids' show on called "Rocket to Adventure." Hosted by a local actor named Ray Rayner (dressed in a cliched 50's-style space suit, of course), this show presented several different cartoon shows from Japan, all having an SF theme. There was "Gigantor," about a boy named Jimmy Sparks, who with his enormous robot Gigantor, went on fantastic adventures and battled a variety of bad guys. There was another one called "8th Man*," about a human-looking robot named Tobor who could run exceedingly fast and disguise himself as other people in the blink of an eye, just by willing it.
And, of course, there was "Speed Racer," which I discovered in the early 70's.
(*The show's title comes from the fact that Tobor was the eighth robot built by his human creator. :alumnus:)

I haven't watched too much anime - besides the obligatory Pokemon back in 5th grade - but from reading about it on wikipedia, Ghost in the Shell looks pretty cool. I've never seen an episode, though, because it comes on at 4 AM on CN.

Favorite anime, let's see. There's so many shows I like, even though I've only recently gotten more seriously into anime. Here's a short list, in no particular order:
-Rozen Maiden
-Cowboy Bebop
-Black Lagoon
-Chobits
-Planetes
-Ah! My Goddess!
-Gunsmith Cats
-Hellsing
There's many more, but I can't remember them all and I'm at work so I can't check my collection. Btw, Mikey, I could recommend a couple of shows to you: Kanokon (new show, only three subbed eps so far), and Shuffle!. Shuffle! is based on an H-game, and it pretty much plays like a game, right down to the music (no H-content, though ;) ). It starts out pretty bland and boring, but about half-way through it really gets into some serious drama, and revelations about everyone's seriously effed up pasts.
Most reviews I've read for Kanokon were pretty negative, but I found it utterly hilarious. A well-endowed (naturally :) ) upperclassman infatuated with a weeny younger guy, and she's not shy about it. In fact, other girls in his class call the guy The Great Ero-King because of her shameless antics. Also, it turns out she's a fox spirit.

I actually already watch Shuffle... It's good, but I don't exactly find it likeable... I don't know why, but I just don't.

My favourite anime in no particular order: Cowboy Bebop, Rozen Maiden 1st season, Kekkaishi, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, Chobits, Ghost in the Shell and GitS: Stand Alone Complex, Minami-ke and Minami-ke Okawari, Shakugan no Shana 1st season, and Escaflowne.
Honorable mentions: Serei no Moribito, Full Metal Alchemist, Gundam Seed, Samurai Champloo, Fate Stay Night, Lucky Star, Manabi Straight, Black Lagoon.
On-going anime that will probably join my favs list once it's finished: Kure-nai.
Bleach might have been up there, except the whole Bount-arc really annoyed me - extremely.

I liked the Bount-arc. I thought it was a clever filler arc. It did have some downfalls, but other than that, I enjoyed it.
So what annoyed you about it?

I find it annoying/frustrating when characters take one step forward and two steps back. Though from my point of view it's more like Ichigo took 5 or 6 steps back. What I found most annoying was how Ichigo was suddenly getting beaten up by villains who used to be weaker than him. I would have felt better if Ichigo getting was getting beaten up by villains stonger than the bankai Ichigo.
Though I have to say I just have an annoyance with the Bount-arc as a whole. There are individual parts I did like. eg. Hatsugaya.

The only thing that annoyed me about it was that it added more "main characters"
How many are there now? 50?
I know it's a bad joke, but seriously, how many more backstories of characters do we need?

:) Yeah, it's getting tedious.
I'm not sure if stuff in the fandom forum needs to be spoilered, but just in case, something I think would improve Bleach is if they stopped repeating things ie. first save Rukia with the SS-arc, and then it's save Orihime with the Arrancar-arc.
UPDATE. Umm, what happened to the spoiler button, am I blind?

Ditto on Haruhi. It's awesome! You did watch it in the correct order, right? Lucky Star from the same company is also one of my favorites. I love the dance sequences in the closer of Haruhi and the opener of Lucky Star. Kyon and Koizumi doing the dance is just hilarious. Their faces are priceless.
Kure-nai is looking pretty good, too. The start was a little confusing, but the development of the relationship of Shintaro and Murasaki is very gripping.

Me, too. First I watched it in the DVD order, which, not counting the "Adventures.." episode, is identical to the chronological. It was a little weird to continue watching after the "Melancholy, Part 6" episode. Later I watched it in the broadcast - or the "correct" - order.

Sorry, I think I didn't explain it correctly. First you drag your cursor across the text you want to put in spoiler color. Then you click on the text color button. That's the Capital "A" with the color bar beneath it. That brings up the pop up window of all the text colors you can use. The spoiler text color is the third color from the right on the bottom row. Click on that and your text will become the same color as the background, thus "spoilered".

Heh, cue the deja vu. ;) Still, my top five hasn't changed.
1. FullMetal Alchemist.
2. Yu Yu Hakusho.
3. Cowboy Bebop.
4. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
5. Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Well, I guess if I can throw in a top sixth, than the Street Fighter II anime movie gets that spot real easy. Sure, it's not a deep movie by any means, but to quote Shego, "Fighting... it's fun to watch."
A top ten, however... Good question. DBZ would get on the list, though that would mainly be for nostalgia (since reading the manga, I really can't watch the anime easily; the movies are fair game, however). Of course, if we were to include manga in this whole discussion, than Rurouni Kenshin would easily take the number one spot in my list (I've never actually watched that anime). Awesome manga series, that it is.

I just found a good one... I recieved the latest Shonen Jump, and they had a preview for the manga, Rosarrio + Vampire, And I know it came out in Japan a couple years back, so I checked to see if there was an Anime for it. Turns out there was.
It's a very very cute show, and the art also falls into the description of cute. I like the strangest things, you know that?

You're right. It does appear a little off color in that panel, but I think it appears different because the color of the back panel for the color choices is itself different.

Hmm... favorites? Well... if I had to rank a top 10, it'd go something like this:
10. Tenchi Universe
While I like both the OVA version and the TV version, with their little differences, I tend to favor the TV series slightly more, as my favorite character is Kiyone.
9. Cowboy Bebop
A great action series, and it has some of my favorite moments in anime.
8. Martian Successor Nadesico
Gai Daigoji! Gai Daigoji! Gai Daigoji! Hey, it's just a fun series.
7. Dominion Tank Police
One of the earlier animes I got into, and even though it's a short series (4 episodes), I still love to revisit it from time to time.
6. Love Hina
Poor Keitaro. Poor, poor Keitaro. It's weirdly funny to watch him get tortured by the girls of Hinata House...
5. Excel Saga
It's just too messed up. And besides, where else do you get the series' director inserting himself into the series, usurping creative control from the original manga artist?
4. Mobile Suit Gundam
The original battle of the One Year War... as aged as the series is, it's still a compelling story of conflict.
3. Mobile Fighter G Gundam
While radically different from traditional Gundam series, I gave it a chance, and I found that I liked the story, so much so that the tragic figure of Kyoji Kasshu ended up becoming my "signature character", supplanting the title character of my number 1 series (see below).
2. Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
The greatest of the Gundam series (at least, through the *gag* SEED era; I've yet to check out Gundam 00).
And finally, my top pick:
1.The Irresponsible Captain Tylor
For some eight years now, this has ranked as far and away my favorite anime. Justy Ueki Tylor (age 20), a guy who joins the military seeking an easy life, manages to become the focal point of an intergalactic conflict. I guess one way to look at it would be, what if a 20-year-old Ron Stoppable was a starship captain? He'd probably be a lot like Tylor... confounding his enemies, irritating his superiors, frustrating many of his own crew, and making the unlikeliest of friends.
Honorable mentions:
The Big O - Post-apocalyptic giant robots meet the art-deco style of Batman: The Animated Series, with a little bit of Evangelion-type mind games thrown in at the end.
Robotech (Macross) - Some good stuff from the '80s
Azumanga Daioh - Recently got into it, pretty funny stuff
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
Tenchi Muyo! - Ryo-Ohki (OVAs)
Trigun
Inuyasha
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Detective Conan ("Case Closed")
Battle Of The Planets - I watched it when I was as young as 4!
Speed Racer
Dragon Ball Z - it got me reinterested in anime in the late '90s
Sailor Moon - ... Ah, Mako-chan. Still my favorite senshi, and the inspiration for a couple of my old usernames...

Seriously, it was HORRIBLE! I thought it would be a great Anime movie, instead I got a super happy happy joy joy ending! I was so dissapointed. I thought Naruto was going to actually die! I wanted a sad ending, but no... Take away the one thing I want the most in an anime...

I've been trying to find an anime I used to watch as a kid, but as I don't remember the name of it, it's pretty hard. It was about racing - they drove these F1 looking cars, some of which had six or eight wheels. Does anyone know the one I'm talking about?
canuck31003
05-06-2008, 08:31 AM
No idea. The only thing I can think of is Speedracer.
Another anime I liked is Touch. It followed closely the manga version. At its most basic, it's about a high school baseball club trying to make Koshien - a popular Japanese baseball tournament. It's main characters are twin brothers, and their neighbor, a girl they both like.

A couple more anime I recommend is Hitohira and Hayate no Gotoku (or in English, Hayate the Combat Butler).
The former is a comedy/drama about an extremely shy high school girl "forced" to join a drama club. The first half or so is mostly comedy and very good, the last half is more drama - I didn't like it as much but it was still good.
Hayate no Gotoku is a comedy and very funny. It makes numerous references to other anime/manga/video games. I don't recognize most of them. So how do I know they're references? Because the anime *beeps* them out due to copyright issues. :P The story starts with the poor, hard-working Hayate, who is forced to take on his fleeing parents' enormous debt to yakuza. To save his organs from being harvested (and form going into forced labor), Hayate decides to kidnap a rich girl for ransom but ends up rescuing her, instead.

This is all but completely random on my part, but this little devART comic (http://shibamura-prime.deviantart.com/art/I-Hate-Death-Note-86211957) does involve an anime character. Doesn't hurt that it left me laughing with youthful abandon... Old school villainy trumps some handy dandy notebook any day of the week.

So which anime do people think has the best music?
I think the songs Bleach plays during the opening/ending credits are for the most part very good. My favorites from this series are Life is a Boat and Happy People.
I've said this before, but I really like the soundtrack to Rozen Maiden.

I liked the theme song for "Gigantor" - it had a definite "calypso" sound to it. I also enjoyed the musical scoring for various episodes of "Speed Racer" - their use of full orchestration (including string sections) during key dramatic scenes made the show more exciting to watch.

Great music, and some good songs too. "Call Me Call Me" is one of my favorites...
The soundtrack for The Big O is pretty cool, too.
I've enjoyed the various soundtracks from many of the Gundam series. From the original 1979 series (whose music is very, very much so from the 1970s), to Zeta Gundam, and even with G Gundam and Gundam Wing... good stuff.

Oh, when it comes to music, than I do so have to side with Cowboy Bebop. And if it counts, then I'm also a big fan of the music found in Xenosaga the Animation. Then there's always Number One from Bleach. Funny, I could never stand that song at first, now it's rather addictive and catchy.
Having been exposed to the Slayers series... I think I'm going to have to alter my top ten list...

Ah, Cowboy Bebop. A fellow fanfic writer (Rocinante of Cellar Series fame - an excellent series, BTW) has mentioned that to me several times and recommends it. I'll have to check it out sometime. I was introduced to the mind-popping Yoko Kanno soundtrack during my "Ghost in the Shell" stage, and if she also worked on Bebop.... :D
