So, who's a fan?

I've liked Mythbusters for quite awhile (along with a bunch of other Discovery Channel shows) and just saw the knew Alaska episode. Sinking the truck was quite interesting. And now we know that cabin fever is indeed possible....:P

Great show. The new episode with them in alaska was great. I loved the cabin fever myth. Adam and Jamie are some funny charaters.

I've been a fan of the show since it started. I'm a bit behind since
i got rid of my satellite, but, my freind tapes them and lets me barrow them so I still see them eventually. :)

I love this show. :D It and KP are two of my favorites.

I, probably like many others, come for the science and stay for the explosions. :P I particularly like the experiment they did testing the effect of water on bullet stopping power. You scoff at that action movie-trick for years, but then realize, "Hey, they were right!"

Ever since I saw that episode I've still been amazed that water can stop even the highest powered bullets. I can't really get that through my head. It's just cool!

Adam and Jamie are great, and so are the others on the show. Their personality brings a lot to solving the myths, and is a large part of why I watch, in addition to the cool science and explosions.

I think the first episode I saw was when Adam was testing the myth about ways to get out of a sinking car. It was really informative, actually.

One of my favorite episodes (out of many! ;)) is the one where they debunked the superhero myths.

Quite a good show, nothing else much to say (At least until my memory stops acting up ). Though, I'd have to say that probably my favorite time on the show was when they were flipping cars and buses over with the engines of a 747  . . . I think.

I thought that was a Brainiac episode. Wasn't MB's attempt abortive because they didn't have the right engine?

Of course, each time the Mythbusters flipped a vehicle, they had the 747's engines running at full throttle. Wasn't the myth about a car or truck that got flipped while driving past a jet that was taxiing, or idling in line on a taxiway? The engine thrust would be far lower then; not nearly enough to flip a motor vehicle over. In fact, once when I was a student pilot, I was preflighting the Cessna 152 I was flying that day when a business jet that was parked nearby started its engines and taxied away. For a moment, I was caught in its jet exhaust but it wasn't strong enough to fling me through the air. It was more like being blasted by a giant blow dryer - warm air pushing against me, causing my pant legs to flutter. I wisely turned my back to the blast when I saw the jet start to roll away from me, and I held onto my plane until it ceased. I was still on my feet, unharmed, afterwards.

Wow, that would be weird if cars and stuff did actually get blown away with the engine on a lower speed. It could end up on one of those "Mythbusters Revisited" episode if they didn't do that myth right.

By the way, has anyone seen the new Discovery Channel commercial where they're all singing? There's a version where Adam sets Jamie's arm on fire-I find that so funny.

Yes, it was. They showed us what works and what doesn't work when it comes to safely exiting a sinking car. I was intrigued by the lengths they went to to ensure a realistic enough simulation - including replacing the car's engine with its weight in ballast under the hood (necessary since they submerged the car in a local high school's swimming pool; they didn't want its water contaminated by any motor oil or other fluids leaking out of the vehicle).

I got my friend watching Mythbusters the other night. She's usually not one for this type of stuff and doesn't generally watch the Discovery Channel, but she enjoyed it. It was the episode dealing with hypnosis and using sound waves to put out fires.

I finally saw the episode where they tackled the moon hoax myths (it ran this past week). I was so glad to see them successfully bust each one; being a strong supporter of our space program, it really aggravates me whenever I hear (or read about) someone claiming that the moon landings were faked. I remember watching a video clip on the Internet not too long ago, where a "moon hoax conspiracy" advocate confronted astronaut Buzz Aldrin outside a venue where Aldrin was about to give a speech. The man approached Aldrin and said something very obnoxious to Aldrin regarding the moon landings (I don't remember exactly what he said right now). Aldrin then punched the guy, knocking him onto the ground, before walking on into the building to give his speech. I absolutely loved it!:laugh:

Oh, they'll rerun it. Discovery Channel's pretty good about doing that. I'm sure you'll see it repeated at least once this season. Just keep an eye on the schedule, and be sure to set up your VCR/DVR/TiVo.

One of my favorite episodes is the one where they debunked some of the myths about the Apollo moon landings (1969-1972) being a hoax. They were able to prove through their experiments that NASA would have had a difficult time faking one moon landing, much less six. The real clincher, though, was at the end of the episode where they visited an observatory in the western U.S. that was able to send a high-powered laser beam at the moon, and bounce it off the retro-reflectors (a set of prisms all contained in a metal frame) that the astronauts left there so the beam returned to Earth. If NASA had faked the moon landings as the conspiracy theorists and hoax proponents claim, the observatory would not have been able to get a return of that laser beam they shot at the moon.
Make no doubt about it: We went to the moon.
And anyone who believes otherwise is delusional, IMHO.

Specifically the University of Texas McDonald Observatory at Fort Davis, Texas. They have tours for those who might be in the area. Fort Davis National Historic Site is pretty interesting, too, it's a restored Indian Wars (briefly reactivated during the Mexican Revolution) fort that was the basis for the fort in John Ford's cavlry trilogy.

Not half as crazy as the rope bridge they made out of duct tape. Adam and Jamie both successfully walked across it, too - although with a great deal of trepidation!
Believe me, though, I understand just how they felt. I once traversed a rope bridge myself back in my Boy Scout days, and let me tell you that was not fun. Those things shake and sway with your every movement, and Adam was right when he commented on how he felt like a spider on a web as he felt their bridge tremble. Actually, two of the captains are from one boat: Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand from the Time Bandit. They, and Sig Hansen from the Northwestern, quit because of a lawsuit filed by Discovery Channel against the Hillstrands regarding a spin-off show following them in their off-season lives. Although Capt. Sig wasn't named in the suit, he quit the show in a gesture of solidarity with the Hillstrands. Here's a link to an article giving some details:

What Discovery Channel will probably do is bring back a couple of boats from previous seasons, or maybe cover two new boats we've never seen before. Who knows?:dontknow:

I pretty much started to hate the time bandit after the drama of season 6 with the shoving match with the wizards captain but, this seals the deal. Because of them, I won't get to see the northwestern anymore.... unbelieveable!

That sticks... if my cable company didn't have discovery channel.... i'd probably have some other company.. I love my mythbusters, American choppers and Deadliest catch. im going to dvr the new episodes and maybe post them on youtube... assuming I'm allowed.

Yeah, you might get into some copyright violation stuff and YouTube may take them down. I do wonder how Deadliest Catch is going to go now, since I hear three of the captains quit the show.
Your probably right but, I'll still give in a go.

Well, the Hillstrands settled the lawsuit with Discovery Channel, so they, along with Sig Hansen and the Northwestern, will be returning to Deadliest Catch for the upcoming new season.
Back to Mythbusters:
I sure feel sorry for Grant and Kari in the latest episode. In order to test the myth about the phrase "cold feet," (where someone who backs off from doing something is said to have gotten cold feet about it) they had to face their worst fears - Grant's having creatures touching or crawling on him; and Kari's having to eat something really gross and revolting. Tory's fear of heights exposure (by flying in the stunt plane) didn't seem to affect him nearly as badly as Kari and Grant's having to face their phobias did them.
But I think all three of them showed tremendous courage by deliberately confronting those particular fears of theirs the way they did.
It's like John Wayne once said: "Courage is being scared to death - but saddling up anyway."

It's like John Wayne once said: "Courage is being scared to death - but saddling up anyway."

Amen, Bro.....

Like Jos Possible says:

Joss: Let's face it, Kim. You can do anything. So facing all
those dangers and villains, well, it's just like you say.
No big.
Kim: Well... I guess.
Joss: A fella filled with that much fear always chargin' into
action with you? Seems to me that's a true hero!

:laugh:I swear, you're a mind-reader! After watching Mythbusters last night, those comments of Joss's actually ran through my head as a perfect example of the meaning of courage.
Nice to know we're thinking along the same lines here...

Yeah, given the increasing scarcity of blank VHS tapes, I may have to buy a DVR myself in the near future.
Of course, I'll need to get a job first in order to pay for it....

Ok... well i dont own a DVR cable box thing... I have windows media center and a tv tunner. Which actually in a way is way better then a DVR. I can keep the recording, cut out commercials and change the format to watch on my PSP on the go. Can't bet it... I dont have to pay monthly fees or anything either, which is a big plus.

I'm glad you've got a system that works, Cloud. Especially one that doesn't require monthly fees!:biggergrin:
Unfortunately, I don't have a TV tuner hooked up to my computer; and I don't trust my Windows Media Player software ever since it stopped working properly a couple years ago. For some reason it just wouldn't burn CDs anymore for me; plus, I was having problems trying to play any discs at all in my computer.
My brother recommended the WinAmp music software, which I downloaded. I've been using it ever since, and it works just fine. The discs I burn using WinAmp are compatible with all my external CD players - component stereo; boombox; car CD player, or even my Discman portable unit - they play just fine in any of those.
I'm just going to have to bite the bullet one of these days and purchase a DVR that also burns DVDs. Fortunately, the prices have come down on those devices in recent years, thanks to mass production.

Well, I couldn't see any episode of mythbusters recently, because I hadn't Discovery Channel  and the fact that when I can see DC, seems like they passed the program schedule to another time. And I can't found it :(

I watched part of an episode of this on my computer yesterday. They examined a viral video I remember watching a while back that showed a motorcycle pulling a tablecloth out from under 24 place settings of china, crystal & silver without disturbing a single piece. The verdict: fake. :D

I saw that on Discovery Channel. I love the way Adam and Jamie figured out just how the viral-video guys managed to fake the stunt, then rigged it up themselves to get the same result.

Last week's show featured an appearance by President Obama (it seems he and his daughters are fans of the show), who asked Adam and Jamie to re-test the myth about Archimedes' mirror-focused heat ray - the one that was supposed to have set a fleet of invading Roman ships on fire.
Tomorrow's episode has them testing a bunch of "Green Hornet" myths, and their guest is none other than Seth Rogen (sp?), who stars in the new Green Hornet movie due out in January. Sounds interesting....

I recently heard a Mythbusters cannonball experiment had gone wrong. A cannonball flew from the bomb range and it hit several houses and a minivan.

I remember catching the end of that story on the news, whatever nite it aired. I'm at work all week when the 5 and 6 pm news is on so, I don't get to watch the whole report.
