View Full Version : TV Show Boxed Sets - What's In Your Collection?

Here's a thread for discussing our favorite TV shows in boxed sets of DVDs. What are your favorites, and how far along are you in collecting the various shows by season?
My collection includes favorites from the 70's; I've got the first four seasons of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," as well as the first three of "All in The Family." I also have the first season of "The Bob Newhart Show."
I have "The Ultimate Carson Collection Starring Johnny Carson, Vols. 1-3." This is a collection of clips from guests he had on "The Tonight Show" during the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's. It also has a bunch of special behind-the-scenes documentaries on Johnny's life and career, and the making of the "Tonight Show." It also includes Johnny's last two shows - the one with Robin Williams and Bette Midler as his final guests; and his very last show on May 22, 1992 where he just reminisced about his years as host. I've got another set of Carson DVDs, titled, "Here's...The Johnny Carson Show," featuring clips from the TV shows he hosted in the 50's, before the "Tonight Show." That's a two-disc set.
I have boxed sets for "Airwolf," seasons 1 & 2 (have yet to get the third season's set). A friend of mine was kind enough to give me an extra boxed set he had of the complete first season of "MacGyver."
I have "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes," a collection of some of the Holmes episodes starring the late Jeremy Brett. That's a 3-disc set.
I've got all the A&E Network's "Horatio Hornblower" movies in boxed sets: "Horatio Hornblower: The Complete Adventures" is a 6-disc set; and the last two "Hornblower" films are included on the 2-disc "Horatio Hornblower: The New Adventures."
On the science-fiction front, I have "Joss Whedon's Firefly - The Complete Series" in a 4-disc set, as well as the complete first season of "Star Trek: The Original Series." That's an 8-disc set.
Since I'm also a Barry Manilow fan, I recently bought "Barry Manilow; The First Television Specials." It's a 5-disc set that includes all the TV specials he created between 1977 and 1988.
Although these last two shows are not released in boxed sets by season, I'm including them here as part of my TV collection. I have all four "Hannah Montana" discs: "Livin' The Rock Star Life!"; "Pop Star Profile;" "Life's What You Make It;" and "One in a Million." Each disc has three episodes of the show on it.
And, of course, I have all four "Kim Possible" DVDs: "The Secret Files;" "The Villain Files;" "A Sitch In Time;" and "So The Drama."
Those are my TV show collections on DVD. What do you have? Feel free to share. :D

Not very many. I own seasons 1 and 2 of Teen Titans, which I bought myself, and season 7 of Dallas, which my daughters bought me for Christmas last year.
I'd like to have The Fugitive, but I don't think the whole series is available yet.

I have the entire Babylon Five series recorded......I didn't buy it, I actually recorded it all...........I'll have to break down and buy it eventually. I have the entire Shogun mini-series. Like TWD, I have all four of the KP DVD's ("The Secret Files;" "The Villain Files;" "A Sitch In Time;" and "So The Drama."), as well as the Disney Christmas DVD with "AVPC" on it, and then I have the Season One Box Set, and very soon the Season Two Box Set as well.:D

I have all the KP DVDs that have been released. I don't have the Disney DVD with 'A Very Possible Christmas' on it, though.
I really, really want the season boxed sets of Full House, but that might have to wait until Christmas. I have a bunch of episodes recorded on my DVR, but there's only so much space. Maybe not Season One, but the rest would be nice...

While they're technically not on DVDs, I do have a few complete collections.
The first is all the seasons of KP; I downloaded them off BitTorrent and iTunes for use in my AMVs.
For the second "boxed set," I bit the bullet and got Season One of "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" off of iTunes.

Off the top of my head?
Airwolf season 3
Seasons 7 and 10 Stargate: SG-1
Stargate: Atlantis season 1
Battlestar Galactica season 1/mini-series
And . . . that's all I can remember. :dubiety:

The X-Files: all.
Star Trek: TNG (VHS): all.
Corner Gas: seasons 1,2.
Due South: seasons 1-3(4).
Monk: seasons 1-4.
Stargate SG-1: seasons 1-6.
Avatar - The Last Airbender: seasons 1-3.
Kim Possible: all the eps available on DVD.
Roughnecks, Chronicles of the Starship Troopers: The complete campaign (which isn't so complete. :( )
Escaflowne: eps 1-26 + movie.
Gundam Seed: eps 1-52.
Hmm, that's all I have, I think -- at least, all I have of television series that premiered eps on a weekly basis in North America.

It's kind of strange thinking about the Olsen twins. They were cute cuddly babies and now they're successful business people in their own right (so I hear).

Off the top of my head...
Angel (all of it)
Batman the Animated Series (all of it)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (all of it)
Cowboy Bebop (all of it)
Darkwing Duck (all of the Disney releases, hopefully they will be a third)
Gargoyles (what little of it Disney released)
Justice League (all of it, including the Unlimited seasons)
Kim Possible (Secret Files, Villain Files, Christmas DVD)
Married With Children (the first six seasons, plan on getting the rest)
Rurouni Kenshin (first and second seasons)
Superman the Animated Series (all of it)
YuYu Hakusho (first season as well as some of the older releases)
At some point I plan on adding Star Trek (original, Next Generation, Enterprise, possibly Voyager) to my collection.

That's right... I was going to get around to doing this one, but just kept forgetting about it...
Let's see... since I'm not home at the moment, I'll have to recall from memory... but, at least, I've got the time to kill.
Stargate SG-1 - seasons 1, 5, 7, and 8 (thus far)
The Transformers - all five box sets released by Rhino
Everything else is anime; either boxed, or the complete series collected individually:
Mobile Suit Gundam - 10 volumes
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team - 4 volumes plus "Miller's Report"
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War In The Pocket - 2 volumes
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory - 4 volumes
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam box set
Mobile Fighter G Gundam - 4 box sets of 3 volumes each
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing - 10 volumes plus Endless Waltz
Martian Successor Nadesico box set
Tenchi Muyo! OAV box set
Tenchi Universe box set
Excel Saga box set
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor TV series box set
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor OAV box set
Neon Genesis Evangelion - 8 volumes (original release)
Love Hina - "Perfect Collection" box set (TV series and OAVs)
One side note - while I haven't picked up any Star Trek DVDs outside of the ten movies, I do still have the complete original series on VHS from Columbia House, that I've had for about 20 years now. And they're still in excellent condition! But, they're boxed up in my storage area in the basement right now; they take up a lot of shelf space!

The box sets do come in four languages from which you can choose the one you want; English, German, French, and Dutch. But the sticking point is that they are region 2 Disks, so they are meant only to play on DVD players set to region 2, which are the ones sold in Europe. In the US we are all going to have region 1 DVD players, so it won't automatically play these disks. There are ways to change the region playing ability on your DVD player, but you would have to do some research on how to do that for your particular DVD player.
You would have to be careful as some methods only allow you to change your region playing status four times and then freezes your DVD player in the last one you chose. But there is software with which you could can play the disks region free on your computer, and if you have the skill you could do a rip of the actual disk with some software that would remove the copy protection and region restriction problems both from the file, which you could then burn onto a disk for playing on your DVD. Technically this is illegal, but if you owned the actual German Box set, then ripped a region free disk for your own usage only, that would probably be allowed as a "backup copy."

I don't have any "brick and mortar" box sets on me (in fact, I swapped my laptop's CD drive out for an extra battery to extend runtime) but I've got wonderful copies of the German disks on my external hard drive, along with both seasons/movies of the anime "Ghost in the Shell," the anime series "Elfen Lied," and the Jason Bourne series, transferred during winter break off the disks my family owns.....
What with my AMVs, the movies, and a backup of all my files, the 600 GB drive is about halfway filled.

Wow, I really haven't added to my collection in the last couple of years.
Although I did end up having to give up my Star Trek tapes when it came time to move last year. But I couldn't watch them anymore anyway, without risk of destroying them, as the two VCRs I had were wrecking tapes left and right. So, as I parted with the dying machines, so too did I part with my tapes.
And since I do have the KP German box sets for seasons 1 and 2, ASiT and StD, and my favorite season 3 and 4 episodes courtesy of iTunes, I didn't bother saving my Every Possible Episode Ever tapes. After all, what's the point of keeping tapes with commercials, channel ID bugs, and intrusive scrolling banners, that I can't even play anymore, when I've got what I want in a clean, pristine format?
(Still, though, that was fun, and great that the marathon coincided with my vacation time, allowing me to watch the entire thing!)
Oops, I forgot to mention that I have all three seasons of Arrested Development as well. In fact, I had them just before my first move back in 2006, but I'd loaned them to my dad to watch. He never got around to it in nearly three years, though, so I reclaimed them before the last move. That, and I've also received the two seasons of Stargate Farscape - err. that is, seasons 9 and 10 of SG-1, and the first season of Atlantis. But I haven't gone out and bought any new sets myself in a long time.

Yup... was an extra in an episode too... also got to be an extra in an episode of Sons of Anarchy, as well as an advisor for another episode. I did some production design and advisory work on a few movies of various production size as well. Most of this was through Independent Studio Services in Sunland and was done on my days off, of course (don't worry, your tax dollars weren't spent paying me to train SAG actors :P). Once I moved out to Phoenix, I stopped doing all that stuff.

We don't know why Seasons Three and Four weren't released in Germany. I can only speculate that the Germans felt there wasn't enough interest in buying them. If they are ever released, they will only be released in Germany, I'm afraid. There was never enough interest in the US to release any of the box sets here.

Now all I need are seasons 6 and 7 (not yet released on DVD) of that show, and my collection will be complete - well, almost, because I'd also like to get a disc of a made-for-TV movie called Mary and Rhoda. What I like best about the boxed sets is that you get to watch each episode in its entirety, without commercial interruptions or any of those other little annoyances the networks inflict on us these days - like channel ID bugs or those idiotic banners scrolling across the bottom of the screen. And with the older shows, you even get to watch the complete, uncut opening and closing credits instead of having them shrunk or squished into a little box and flashed by in seconds too fast to read while the network runs a pushy ad in the rest of your screen for some show you really don't want to watch.
Nope - none of that junk on the boxed sets. Just entertainment, pure and simple....

I hate to say it, but realistically I doubt it will ever happen. But there is a slight chance I could be wrong. There have been box sets of other old shows, even shows from the 60's and 70's that have gone on sale. As is gets cheaper and cheaper to produce the box sets, it gets more and more appealing. The only limiting factor is that it is a Disney show, and they have a definite attitude and opinion as to this sort of thing, which is why I think the chances are very low. The only thing I think that would trigger it is if KP somehow made a resurgence, but we all know the chances of that........:ohwell:

Well, on the KP side of things, I've got StD and ASiT, as well as a good number of episodes on iTunes (I recently found out they expanded their Season 1 lineup. Yay!)
But iTunes is not what this thread is about.
On the whole DVD boxed set thing, I've got two volumes of Chip N' Dale's Rescue Rangers (a third volume should complete the episodes, but whether or not Disney will release it...), the second season of Hogan's Heroes, the Band of Brothers miniseries, and the "Time Travel" Star Trek episode collection.

You're right about that - it is a bargain. I 'm just grumping due to my current budget conditions (thanks to being unemployed).
Any time I can save a buck, I'll do it.
In fact, there are days when I haven't driven anywhere or spent a dime - times like those help my minuscule resources go farther.

Since my last entry, I've added the sixth season of The Mary Tyler Moore Show to my collection, as well as two six-episode discs of The Underdog Show from the sixties and the 11-disc boxed set of The World at War.

I finally added the seventh season of The Mary Tyler Moore Show to my collection. I now own the entire series on DVD!
Now I want to get a disc of that made-for-TV movie, Mary and Rhoda, starring Ms. Moore and Valerie Harper, that came out in 2000. It picks up 23 years after the series ended, with Mary Richards and Rhoda Morgenstern reuniting in New York City. I know it's out on DVD because I saw a copy on display in a store back in January 2004 (should have picked it up back then, blast it).
