Chapter 9: Surgery Talk

The next day, Kim and Quin went to the hospital to visit Ron. On their way there, they stopped by a flower shop and bought him a card and some daffodils (to match his hair). They entered the main lobby of the hospital. Kim and Quin walked up to Ron’s room.

“Hey, Ron.” Kim greeted him softly as she and Quin entered his room. Quin had the flowers behind her back.

“Hey *cough* guess.” Ron said quietly.

“We brought you these.” Quin said as she held out the flowers.

“Thanks guys.” Ron said as Quin put them in a vase.

On his nightstand there was a stack of get well cards from the entire school – even Bonnie. Kim and Quin looked at each other nervously. Neither one knew how they should bring up what they heard Ron’s parents discuss last night.

“Well, Ron, last night we uh, heard your parents talking…” Kim started.

        “Yeah? About *cough* what?”

        “And your parents were thinking about letting the doctors uh, remove the cancer.” Quin finished.

        Ron looked at them suspiciously. “What are you getting at?”

“You’re going to have surgery to remove the cancer.” Kim said.

        Ron was starting to get worried. “Wh-when?” he asked.

“Pretty soon.” Quin said, “But you can’t tell your parents that you know.”

        Ron looked puzzled. “Why?” he asked.

        “We were kinda eavesdropping.” Kim said.

        Just then Ron’s parents came in. Kim and Quin gulped.

        “Hey, sweetie.” His mom greeted him, “How are you?”

        “Okay.” Ron replied.

“Ronald, we need to talk.” His dad said as he sat down on the edge of Ron’s bed. Kim and Quin exchanged glances, nodded, and then ran out of the room.

Ron’s mom looked at them. “Well, Ron, we’ve scheduled for you to have surgery tomorrow.” His dad said. Ron faked a worried look.

“But don’t worry, the doctors will make sure you’re okay.” His mom reassured him.

“Okay,” Ron said. His mom kissed his forehead before exiting the room with his dad.

        Once they were gone, Ron whispered. “Why me…”



(At Bueno Nacho)



        Kim and Quin were sitting at a booth together. Nether one had touched their food. Rufus didn’t even eat.

        The Kimmunicator’s four tone beep interrupted the silence. Kim pulled it out and turned it on. “Hey, Wade.” She said, picking at a nacho.

        “Hi, Kim. I called to see how Ron was doing…. I found out about last night’s fiasco.” Wade said.

        “He’s going to be alright. Tomorrow he has surgery.” Quin piped up. She had been quite for the past half hour. (Kinda hard to believe though!)

        “I know. I hacked the hospital’s records.” he replied.

        “Then why did you call us?” Kim asked, looking at Wade suspiciously.

        “Well,” he said, rubbing the back of his head, “we got a hit on the site. Think you’re up to it?” Kim looked at Quin, who nodded.

        “Okay, Wade, we’ll do it. So what happened?”

        “Well, there was another security breach at that military base in Arabia.” Wade said.

        Quin groaned. “Not again…Lemme guess. It was Drakken and Shego.”

        Wade nodded. “Right on the dot. We need you to go and stop them.”

        Kim sighed. “Okay Wade, can you set us up with a ride?”

        “Already done. It should be there in a couple of minutes.”

        “Thanks Wade.” Kim said as she turned of the Kimmunicator. Then she turned to Quin. “Are you sure that you’re up to it?”

        Quin only nodded.

        “Well, alright.” Kim said as she looked uncertainly at Quin.
